Restore failed: vault key mismatch
WP Restore decrypts MigraSync Managed Cloud backups with your Master Vault Key. If the key does not match the one used when the backup was created, restore cannot proceed. This is by design — encryption protects your data even if cloud storage were compromised.
Symptoms
- Restore wizard rejects the key at Master Vault Key step
- Error about decryption or vault verification failure
- Restore starts then fails during download/extract
Correct key for this backup
- Find the Recovery Sheet you downloaded when the backup was taken.
- Or retrieve the key from your password manager.
- Enter the key exactly — watch for extra spaces or wrong keyboard layout.
Changing your key today does not re-encrypt old backups. Each backup point uses the key that was active when it ran.
If you changed the key after the backup
You need the old key for older backup points and the new key only for backups taken after the change.
If you lost the key
MigraSync cannot recover or reset your Master Vault Key. Encrypted cloud backups without the key cannot be restored.
Options:
- Restore from an older backup point if you still have an earlier key
- Rebuild the site manually if no other copies exist
- Prevent recurrence: store the Recovery Sheet securely — see Master Vault Key
Before you retry restore
- Confirm Essential or Pro backup plan is active — WP Restore overview
- Pick a Completed backup in the wizard
- Use Restore to same URL vs another URL correctly — restore same site · clone to new site
